The conversations in the park make me nauseous – it’s all about the best place to get Mishloach manos baskets from, and what costumes everyone bought for their kids.
Let me explain to you what Purim is like for those of us with no money.
No costumes for the kids, because how can I justify spending even 10 shekel per kid when every penny needs to be spent on rent? All my kids’ teachers deserve Mishloach Manos, but we don’t have funds to buy anything even semi-respectable.
The thought of Purim fills me with dread. My kids are little, they’re mortified that they can’t dress up.
Anyone can fall on hard times. The organization Chasdei Avraham Yaakov helps struggling families in Yerushalayim with funds for Purim. The problem is, they are extremely low on funds and are in danger of collapsing – but too many people like me rely on them. They, really I, need your help.
Please don’t make me wait until Purim to receive help, let us have the dignity of preparing for Purim now.
