It has been one year since the final piece of concrete was removed from the last of four dams on the Klamath River in northern California. Tribes and environmentalists say the river, the fish and other species that depend on the Klamath’s health are recovering and tribes continue to reclaim their lands and waters.

Fall marks the start of event season and in Arizona that means dozens of food festivals that span the globe. Here are the best ones to check out .
Here are just some of the historic events on this date in the past.

On this day in 1927: Charles Kingsford Smith and Charles Ulm completed the first trans-Pacific flight, traveling from California to Hawaii in a Fokker tri-motor aircraft.

In 1934: The first book in the Mary Poppins series by P.L. Travers was published, introducing readers around the world to the magical nanny.

In 1957: Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite in orbit, transmitted signals back to Earth for the first time, marking the beginning of the Space Age.

In 1960: The song “Shop Around” by The Miracles became Motown’s first-ever No. 1 hit, establishing the Motown sound as a driving force in the music industry.

In 1973: Vice President Spiro T. Agnew resigned amid charges of income tax evasion on illegal payments allegedly received while he was governor of Maryland, as well as after he became vice president. He was given a $10,000 fine and sentenced to serve three years’ probation. His VP successor, Gerald R. Ford, went on to become president after the resignation of Richard M. Nixon.

In 2014: The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai, at 17, the youngest Nobel laureate in history. She was recognized for her advocacy of education for girls in Pakistan after surviving an assassination attempt by the Taliban.
