Here are just some of the events on this date in the past.

•	On this day in 1797: In Paris, pioneering balloonist André-Jacques Garnerin paved the way for modern skydiving when, after reaching an altitude of 3,200 feet in a hot air balloon, he descended with a silk parachute. It was an idea he dreamed up while in prison during the French Revolution.
•	In 1879: Thomas Edison successfully tested an electric incandescent lamp with a carbonized filament at his laboratory in Menlo Park, New Jersey, keeping it lit for over 13 hours – and paving the way for the widespread use of electric lights.
•	In 1968: Apollo 7 returned to Earth after test flights, solidifying the success of the first manned Apollo mission with a safe return that demonstrated the feasibility of sending astronauts to the moon.
•	In 1975: The Soviet space probe Venera 9 became the first spacecraft to transmit images from another planet when it sent back close-up pictures of the surface of Venus.
•	In 1986: The International Whaling Commission voted for a moratorium on commercial whaling, a crucial step in the conservation of whale species worldwide.
•	In 1999: Former French civil servant Maurice Papon was convicted of crimes against humanity for his role in deporting Jewish people to Nazi death camps during World War II.
