The aim was to cripple the industrial infrastructure of this key manufacturing hub. Antiaircraft fire kept the bombers so high, however, that aim was difficult to manage, and the bombs fell indiscriminately, destroying more than 4,300 homes while damaging three-quarters of the city’s factories.•In 1960: A U.S. patent was issued for an alkaline dry cell battery to Paul Marsal, Karl Kordesch and Lewis Urry, and assigned to the Union Carbide Corporation, which made Eveready batteries.•In 1969: The first Wendy’s Old-Fashioned Hamburgers was opened by founder Dave Thomas in Columbus, Ohio, offering square patties sticking out at the corners from their round bun. Thomas named the restaurant after his 8-year-old daughter.•In 1971: Intel advertised the 4004 processor, the first commercial microprocessor.•In 1979: A pipe bomb made by the Unabomber, Ted Kaczynski, exploded in the cargo cabin of an American Airlines 727 traveling from Chicago to Washington, D.C.
