Artificial intelligence has long been an area of interest for former Sen. Kyrsten Sinema. She was a member of the Senate Artificial Intelligence Caucus during her time on Capitol Hill.

Sinema and ASU recently launched a new learning innovation center focused on AI. Here’s who it will help.

Here are just some of the events on this date in the past.

•	On this day in 1872: The first American Arbor Day was celebrated in Nebraska. More than 1 million trees were planted. The brainchild of J. Sterling Morton, Arbor Day is now celebrated worldwide.
•	In 1963: The nuclear-powered attack submarine USS Thresher sank at sea 220 miles east of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, killing its 129 crew and personnel. Flooding in the engine room was the most probable cause of the sinking. Its loss led the U.S. Navy to develop and implement the SUBSAFE program.
•	In 1971: Nine players from the U.S. table tennis team visited communist China for a weeklong visit. Later called the Ping-Pong Diplomacy, it was the first time a U.S. delegation visited China in decades and helped thaw U.S.-China relations.
•	In 1972: The Biological Weapons Convention opened for signatures. Eventually signed by over 180 countries, the treaty prohibits the development, production, stockpiling and transfer of biological weapons.
•	In 1975: At 41, Lee Elder became the first Black golfer to play in the Masters, golf’s most prestigious tournament. He went on to play in the Masters five more times.
•	In 2019: The first ever image of a black hole was released. An international team of researchers from the Event Horizon telescope provided the world with an image of a super massive black hole located at the center of the Messier 87 galaxy. Located 55 million light years away from Earth, it has a mass that is 6.5 billion times that of the Sun.
