On this day in 1917: World War I spy Mata Hari was executed by a French firing squad at Vincennes Barracks, outside Paris. The Dutch exotic dancer was convicted of spying for Germany, although her guilt is debated by historians.

In 1925: The first issue of The New Yorker was published. Known for its influential commentary on popular culture and current affairs, the magazine was founded by journalist Harold Ross and his wife Jane Grant.

In 1946: Nazi leader Hermann Goering, who was convicted during the Nuremberg trials, committed suicide by swallowing a cyanide capsule in his prison cell hours before his scheduled hanging for war crimes.
