He eventually planted 33 bombs over the course of 16 years, most between 1951 and 1956, of which 22 exploded, injuring 15 people.•In 1960: Actor Clark Gable, the Academy Award-winning leading man many called the “King of Hollywood,” died of a heart attack at the age of 59.•In 1973: Skylab 4 launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, carrying three astronauts who were the third and final crew of the Skylab space station. Gerald P. Carr, William Pogue and Edward Gibson spent 84 days in space on the mission, which was the record until 1977-78 when Yuri Romanenko and Georgi Grechko of the Soviet Union spent 96 days in space.•In 1973: Early in the 1973 oil crisis after the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries announced an embargo against the United States, President Richard Nixon signed the Trans-Alaska Pipeline Authorization Act, advancing the effort to build the 800-mile pipeline system from Prudhoe Bay in the north of the state to Valdez in the south.•In 1984: Stephanie Fae Beauclair, who had been given a baboon heart transplant in an effort to save her life, died just weeks after being born and 21 days after the transplant. Baby Fae, as she had become known, was born three weeks premature on Oct. 14 with hypoplastic left heart syndrome.•In 2020: A clinical trial found Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine to be 95.4% effective.•In 2022: NASA launched its Artemis I mission, the first to use its new Space Launch System intended to eventually bring people back to the moon.
