Here are just some of the events on this date in the past.

•	On this day in 1779: John Paul Jones led the American ship Bonhomme Richard to victory against the British warship HMS Serapis in the Battle of Flamborough Head. Jones famously declared, “I have not yet begun to fight!” and ultimately forced the British to surrender.
•	In 1846: Astronomer Johann Gottfried Galle, guided by calculations from Urbain Le Verrier, observed Neptune for the first time at the Berlin Observatory, confirming the existence of the eighth planet in our solar system.
•	In 1889: Nintendo was founded in Kyoto, Japan, by Fusajiro Yamauchi.
•	In 1957: President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed Executive Order 10730, which authorized federal troops to support the integration of Central High School in Little Rock, Ark. The 101st Airborne Division was dispatched to ensure the safety of the “Little Rock Nine.”
