3 Potential Scenarios to Watch for in D-Wave’s Earnings Report

Shares of quantum computing firm D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NYSE: QBTS) skyrocketed by 244% so far in 2025 on a great deal of hype and an even heftier volume of speculation. Though shares have cooled in the last month, dropping by about 5.5% in the 30 days leading to Nov. 3, investors have still jumped at hints of success for the firm—including rumors that the federal government may be considering taking equity positions in D-Wave and other quantum firms, for example, or news that the company made an important sale in Europe.

For many investors trying to gauge how a promising tech name that continues to chase profitability is living up to its potential, the proof will be in the earnings. D-Wave is set to report third-quarter earnings on Nov. 6, following mixed Q2 results that featured strong revenue and a solid cash position but wider-than-expected losses. Here are three key scenarios investors should watch in the upcoming report.

Big Win: Confirming Revenue Growth and Path to Profitability

The key results that many investors are hoping for when D-Wave reports earnings is a continuation of its upward trajectory when it comes to revenue and the emergence of a clear path to sustained profitability. After last quarter’s 42% year-over-year revenue increase, the first part of this goal seems within reach—after all, D-Wave’s Advantage2 system has continued to draw interest. Perhaps even better than individual sales of major quantum systems would be signs that D-Wave is building a growing recurring revenue profile through its cloud-based service. While Advantage2 sales have provided a hefty revenue boost, they are relatively infrequent and focused primarily on large-scale organizations and government clients.

The second aspect of this scenario may be less likely, at least for the near-term, while quantum tech is still evolving at a rapid pace and the industry is finding its footing. Broad marketability might help D-Wave to achieve its profitability goals, so the announcement of a major technological development that would help to further distinguish this company from its competitors—and to draw a wider customer base—would be a major boon. The announcement of a major acquisition that could be immediately accretive might also be possible, given D-Wave’s strong cash reserves as of mid-year.

Neutral: Slow and Steady Progress, But Nothing to Fuel (or Dispel) the Hype

One of the more likely scenarios for D-Wave’s earnings report is, essentially, more of the same. The company has been notching tech developments through regular press releases, and sales of its Advantage2 system are still infrequent enough that it announces many of these as well. So it is not inconceivable that there may be relatively little of note in terms of technological or business developments in an earnings report.

On one hand, continuing the growth of D-Wave’s revenue and the progress of the company’s R&D would be a benefit. However, D-Wave’s massive rally so far this year—and its price-to-sales ratio of nearly 1,300—demand firmer evidence of its financial success and its increasing marketability in order to maintain the hype. Without a big win in one of these categories, QBTS shares may deflate somewhat as investors grow tired of waiting for a breakout moment.

Setback: Tech-Related, Regarding Competition, Or Otherwise

If the pace of revenue growth appears to slow, this could also be troublesome for D-Wave. Given how greatly the firm has relied on sales of Advantage2, any perceived setback to this product line may be disastrous. A hurdle could also take the form of a technological challenge: D-Wave’s focus has been on annealing technology, and while the company has made important breakthroughs that suggest annealing may be more broadly marketable than skeptics originally estimated, this is anything but a sure thing for the company’s future business success.

Even a delay or a plateau in tech-related achievements could be challenging for D-Wave, particularly given how competitive the quantum space is. Companies that are not constantly impressing with innovations are likely to get left behind. Some of D-Wave’s greatest challenges are likely to come not from its own performance, but from the threat its quantum rivals pose.

Eli Lilly Posts Stellar Q3: Long-Term Upside Is Well in Play

Since tanking in early August, shares of Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE: LLY) have roared back with a vengeance. The world’s most valuable healthcare stock plummeted around 14% on Aug. 7 after releasing somewhat disappointing data on its developmental oral GLP-1 drug, orforglipron. Eli Lilly shares have surged around 40% from that August dip.

Aiding the stock’s rise was Lilly’s Q3 2025 earnings report, released on Oct. 30. Shares rose around 10% over the three following trading days. Below, we’ll break down Eli Lilly’s latest earnings and gain an updated outlook on the stock. Overall, how should investors view the short- and long-term potential of Eli Lilly shares?

Lilly Posts Big Q3 Beats, Mounjaro’s International Sales Skyrocket

Lilly’s Q3 results trounced expectations. Revenue came in at $17.6 billion, equal to a nearly 54% growth rate. This was Lilly’s fastest quarterly growth rate in company history and far surpassed expectations of 41% growth. Lilly also smashed its estimates on the bottom line, with adjusted earnings per share of $7.02. This figure beat estimates by 60 cents. Lilly also boosted the midpoint of its full-year revenue guidance by $2.25 billion to $63.25 billion. The midpoint of its adjusted EPS guidance also rose by around 98 cents to $23.35.

Lilly brands its most important drug, tirzepatide, as both Zepbound and Mounjaro. Zepbound continues its explosive growth, with sales rising 185%. Mounjaro’s 109% growth was also very impressive. Lilly continues to take share in the U.S. “incretin analogs” market, in which Zepbound and Mounjaro both reside. Particularly noteworthy was the strength of international Mounjaro sales. Mounjaro’s international revenue more than quadrupled to $3 billion versus $728 million in Q3 2024. Overall, Lilly’s results were music to investors’ ears, justifying the significant run-up in shares recently. Now, let’s examine the future of Eli Lilly in the short and long term.

Analysts See Moderate Near-Term Upside in LLY

The MarketBeat consensus price target on Lilly stands at $940. This figure implies moderate upside potential in shares of just under 5%. However, it is notable that after Lilly’s Q3 release, Cantor Fitzgerald set a considerably more bullish price target of $985. The figure implies just under 10% upside in shares.

Overall, this price target data helps provide a gauge of Lilly’s near-term potential.

Given the dramatic rise in shares over the past few months, it’s not surprising to see that the stock’s implied upside is relatively limited. Notably, Lilly trades at a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 30x. This is 33% below its average forward P/E of 45x during the last three years. This suggests that Eli Lilly’s valuation is much more reasonable than it has been in the past, which could potentially limit downside risk.

LLY: Strong Long-Term Potential, But Approval and Trial Risk Always Looms

Lilly’s real potential for appreciation comes over a long-term horizon. The company still has yet to start selling orforglipron, which could be its next blockbuster. The company plans to apply for regulatory approval of orforglipron by the end of the year. If approved, the drug could come onto the market in the second half of 2026 or early 2027.

There is also retatrutide, Lilly’s developmental triple agonist weight-loss and diabetes drug. Retatrutide is currently in a plethora of Phase 3 Food and Drug Administration (FDA) trials. Previous trial results have shown that retatrutide could be even more effective than tirzepatide, which is currently the most effective drug of its kind on the market.

Retatrutide saw a mean weight reduction of up to 24.2% at 48 weeks in a Phase 2 trial. Comparatively, tirzepatide showed a mean weight reduction of up to 20.9% at 72 weeks. Thus, retatrutide has shown the potential to result in significantly more weight loss in a much shorter timeframe. This provides retatrutide with the ability to be another huge winner for Eli Lilly down the road. Eli Lilly expects to receive results for up to six Phase 3 retatrutide trials by the end of 2026. These results will undoubtedly have a significant impact on Lilly’s share price, for better or worse.

However, given the company’s demonstrated success in the weight loss and diabetes market so far, it is reasonable to think this success will continue. Still, there is a significant risk that orforglipron or retatrutide do not receive FDA approval. Ultimately, these are risks that investors should be comfortable with if they wish to capture the considerable long-term upside potential in LLY shares.

Uber Is Crushing Lyft—And It’s Not Even Close

There’s no shortage of markets that have become dominated by just two companies.

Notable duopolies have emerged in fast food, with McDonald’s (NYSE: MCD) and Burger King becoming the iconic brands. Starbucks (NASDAQ: SBUX) and Dunkin rule the coffee landscape, and Nike (NYSE: NKE) and Adidas (OTCMKTS: ADDDF) are at the forefront of athletic apparel and footwear.

But other duopolies have a more tenuous relationship. And when it comes to Uber Technologies (NYSE: UBER) and Lyft (NASDAQ: LYFT), it looks like the former is en route to becoming a veritable rideshare monopoly.

Uber’s Global Footprint Helped It Pull Away

Uber now operates in over 70 countries, including 15,000 cities worldwide. Specifically, the company maintains operations in Hong Kong, India, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and other heavily populated Asian nations.

That provides Uber with a particular edge over Lyft.

While Lyft primarily operates in the United States and Canada, its July 31 acquisition of FREENOWexpanded its operations to 11 European countries.

But that’s likely a case of too little, too late.

While Lyft’s expansion into Europe is notable, Uber has a foothold in the world’s largest and most populous continent.

According to market consultancy firm Grand View Research, the global rideshare market is projected to undergo a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.7% from 2025 to 2030, reaching a value of $96.9 billion. The Asia Pacific market is the largest with a 49.3% revenue share. In that market, Lyft presently poses zero risk to Uber.

Lyft Lags in Autonomous Vehicle Technology

As a transportation-first company, Uber operates in the industrials sector.

But the rideshare company is still, in many ways, a technology company. Uber has been leaning heavily into growth strategies that focus on electric vehicles (EVs) and autonomous vehicles (AVs). The company already has AV mobility and delivery deployments in a dozen cities across three countries, with an additional five cities slated to join by year’s end.

Uber’s AV technology isn’t being used solely for human transportation, either. The company is tapping AV for food delivery using all-electric sidewalk robots as well as dipping its toes into freight using autonomous trucking.

According to the company, “Uber Freight delivers an end-to-end enterprise suite of logistics solutions to advance supply chains while maximizing savings, visibility, and efficiency.” That’s resulted in $1 billion saved over the past year by companies using the program to deliver 18 million shipments. Lyft doesn’t offer a freight program, nor does it have any plans to do so.

Still, Lyft is also investing in AV programs.

The company has strategic partnerships with Waymo, Baidu (NASDAQ: BIDU), and Tensor, and is moving towards developing its own fleet.

But Uber has a leg up in the AV race, having partnered with legacy automaker Stellantis (NYSE: STLA), luxury EV maker Lucid (NASDAQ: LCID), and self-driving tech company Nuro.

Other AV partners include Waymo, Volkswagen (OTCMKTS: VWAGY), and Volvo (OTCMKTS: VLVLY).

Uber’s Membership Program Has More Users Than Lyft’s Entire Customer Base

Both companies have successfully launched membership models, but they’re not apples to apples.

Uber One, Uber’s membership model, provides savings on eligible rides, Uber Eats deliveries, eligible delivery fee-free orders, and discounts on groceries. Uber One costs $9.99 per month or $96 per year and auto-renews.

Lyft’s primary membership program—Lyft Pink—also offers ride discounts, priority pickups, and free scooter rentals. The program is similarly priced ($9.99 monthly and $99 per year) and also autorenews, but it falls short by omitting a food delivery option.

While Lyft doesn’t disclose figures for its Lyft Pink program, the company reported a total of 25 million active riders across the entire Lyft platform. Uber One alone has 36 million members, and Uber as a whole has approximately 180 million monthly active users.

In FY 2024, Uber Eats contributed $13.7 billion to the company’s top line—a 13.2% year-over-year (YOY) increase from FY 2023. Lyft, by contrast, previously tried to delve into food delivery but has since abandoned those efforts.

At its current run rate, it is estimated that the company will see that figure increase to more than $15 billion in revenue by the conclusion of 2025. Underscoring that figure, Uber’s largest competitor in food delivery—DoorDash (NASDAQ: DASH)—brought in just $10.72 billion in FY 2024.

Uber’s Eye-Catching Increases in Bookings and Revenue

Uber has averaged 19.6% YOY increases in bookings over the past five quarters, which has translated into 19% YOY increases in revenue over the same period.

So it’s little surprise that analysts are more bullish on the stock than they are on Lyft.

Uber receives a consensus Moderate Buy rating with the average 12-month price target representing 6.81% upside from today’s price.

Lyft receives a consensus Hold rating with the average 12-month price target suggesting 6.05% downside from today’s price.
