Hawking’s work on the physics of black holes helped reshape the scientific understanding of the universe, even after being diagnosed with a motor neuron disease also known as ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, early in life that gradually paralyzed him.•In 1956: Jim Elliot and four other U.S. missionaries were attacked and killed by six Waorani warriors of the Ecuadorian rainforest. The missionaries had hoped to bring Christianity to the Waorani, which was an isolated tribe that fiercely defended their territory at that time.•In 1964: In his State of the Union address, President Lyndon Johnson declared an “unconditional war on poverty” in the United States. Over the course of his administration, major pieces of legislation were passed to combat poverty in the states, including the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964, the Food Stamp Act of 1964 and the Social Security Act of 1965.•In 1998: Ramzi Ahmed Yousef, a Kuwaiti-born militant, was convicted as the mastermind behind the 1993 terrorist bombing of the World Trade Center in New York and sentenced to life plus 240 years in prison.•In 2002: President George W. Bush signed the No Child Left Behind Act, which aimed to improve student performance and achievements through annual standardized testing.•In 2011: U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and 18 others were shot by Jared Lee Loughner at a meeting with constituents at a supermarket parking lot near Tucson. Six people were killed, including 9-year-old Christina-Taylor Green.
