| The 126th Christmas Bird Count is almost here! We’re getting ready for the 126th Christmas Bird Count (CBC), with local counts running from December 14th to January 5th! Beginning in 1900, this hemispheric bird count is one of the longest-running formal community science projects. New this year, you are invited to sign up for a CBC overview webinar for participants (recording released Dec. 1) or join a live Q&A about the CBC on Dec. 4 at 7pm ET. If you are interested in joining a count in your area, you can find information about your local count on the CBC circle map. Click here to learn about how to participate in your local CBC. |

You don’t have to be a bird identification expert to participate! Participants can choose to survey for any of 12 target species (including bluebirds, nuthatches, towhees, goldfinches, or buntings). The 2026 winter season of Climate Watch is kicking off in a couple short months, with the count period running from January 15 to February 15, 2025. Learn more about Climate Watch and how to participate here and sign up for our upcoming webinar on December 10th at 7pm ET to find out more about the program. |

News from the Science Desk: Neotropical Urban Bird DiversityA recent study published in PLOS One highlighted how the Christmas Bird Count (CBC) can fill data gaps for urban birds. Most studies on urban birds are short-term and are located in the northern hemisphere. But in this case, the CBC served as a critical long-term dataset that allowed scientists to examine urban bird diversity in Colombia. The study documented differences in types of bird species found in urban and peri-urban sites, guiding conservation practices that can preserve native avifauna in urban areas throughout Neotropical countries.
