A handful of right-wing extremists in the House of Representatives are willing to risk a government shutdown if their demands for even more cuts to critical human needs programs and funding for a border wall aren’t met.
We cannot allow our government to be held hostage by a bunch of zealots who behave like toddlers throwing a temper tantrum.
This is why CHN and our coalition partners are fighting back by lobbying members of Congress to reject these right-wing demands and avert a government shutdown that would needlessly harm millions of households. We’re convening partners for conversations with congressional offices and sending thousands of messages to Congress each day demanding they stand up to extremists and avert a government shutdown.
A government shutdown would result in delays in critical government services from nutrition to housing to Social Security to Medicare.
We’ve already seen Congress enact drastic cuts to SNAP, more cuts proposed for WIC, millions of people being disenrolled from state Medicaid programs, and the number of evictions skyrocketing due to eviction moratoriums and emergency rental assistance ending.
Most people are living paycheck-to-paycheck as corporations continue to price gouge consumers and the price of everything from gas to rent has gone up.
The American people deserve a government that works for them, not wealthy donors, billion dollar corporations, and their lobbyists.
