Last night, Minnesota Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman, were killed in a targeted and politically motivated shooting — an assassination.
Senator John Hoffman and his wife were also shot, and are in critical condition. We know the doctors and nurses will do everything they can, and are praying for their speedy recovery.
My family and I know the horror of a targeted shooting all too well. Attacks on lawmakers are attacks on our democracy itself. I am calling on all of our leaders to speak out and condemn the violent extremism threatening everything this country stands for.
Melissa was a partner and friend to GIFFORDS and to me. I was on the ground during the legislative session when Minnesota moved several gun safety measures through in 2023, and those measures passed because of her leadership.
Today, I am heartbroken. But we will never be intimidated.
One of the most important ways we honor the ones we have lost is by ensuring tragedies like this never happen again. That is my mission, and the mission of GIFFORDS.
