➤➤ BREAKING: Trump’s AI plan could wipe out state protections for a decade
Senate Republicans have quietly kept a 10-year moratorium on state AI laws in their latest version of Donald Trump’s massive federal budget package, which is heading to the Senate for a vote.
Let us be blunt: this hands Big Tech a decade-long free pass, and rips away the ability of states to protect consumers, workers, and democracy from the harms of unregulated artificial intelligence.
The House already passed it as part of the so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” (some without even reading it). Now it’s up to the Senate — and if it passes there, state leaders will be banned from enacting or enforcing AI rules until 2035. What does that mean?
- ➤ No regulation of algorithmic bias.
- ➤ No limits on AI-powered surveillance.
- ➤ No protections against deep fakes or misinformation tools that could destabilize elections.
- ➤ No federal standards.
- ➤ No corporate accountability.
- ➤ No timeline for real regulation.
Now, every state in the country will be prevented from having basic regulations to protect workers and to protect consumers. Horrifying.
At DASS, we’re sounding the alarm too — and we’re standing with the Secretaries of State who have long been leaders in protecting democratic institutions from unchecked power, including corporate overreach.
Can you chip in $3 today to help us fight back against this moratorium and defend the right of states to act when Congress won’t?
