When Trump tweets don’t work anymore, pay attention

Something’s not right.

This morning we got the China deal announcement from the administration — basically done, pending approval. Market shrugged. Then CPI came in cool (that’s supposed to be good for rates, good for the economy), market initially popped… then reversed hard.

Here’s what’s bugging me: last week Trump mentioned a phone call with China and the market rallied. This week they announce the deal is essentially done and nobody cares.

In fact, we’re selling off on it.

That tells me something fundamental has shifted.

But here’s what really caught my attention today — and this is something most people completely miss when they’re staring at the VIX:

The VVIX volume is 11 times normal.

Not the VIX itself (though it’s moving). I’m talking about the VVIX — the volatility OF the VIX. That thing is soaring 9% today, and when I check the volume, it’s absolutely through the roof.

You know what that means? Professional money is back on the hedge. They’re protecting for downside, and they’re doing it in mass.
