Alert: Donald Trump cut hundreds of millions of dollars for gun violence and addiction prevention. This will cost lives.

The Trump administration canceled more than $800 million in grants to local gun violence prevention and crime reduction groups — calling it “wasteful” spending. This will have devastating impacts.
Republicans and Democrats alike support reducing crime. And that’s exactly what these community violence intervention programs are doing.
The money from these grants went to helping young people get mentors. It went to supporting survivors of crime and abuse. It went to getting local police departments and cities more public safety resources.
And it worked!
Last month, Baltimore had the lowest number of homicides it has ever seen. Philadelphia reported its lowest homicide rate in a decade. Detroit, too — the lowest in more than 50 years.
But now, these Trump cuts are going to set back all of our work. And when asked of future cuts, the administration said there are “more to come.”
