On this day in 1945: The U.S. Seventh Army liberated thousands of prisoners in the Nazi concentration camp at Dachau, Germany. The camp was the first to be established by the Nazi regime in 1933 and became a model for other concentration camps. The number of prisoners was estimated to be around 200,000. Experts believe that as many as 40,000 detainees died at Dachau. |

In 1946: The International Military Tribunal for the Far East convened to prosecute former Japanese Prime Minister Hideki Tojo and 28 former high-ranking Japanese leaders for war crimes. Seven defendants were sentenced to death and sixteen others were sentenced to life in prison. |

In 1992: Riots erupted across Los Angeles in response to the trial acquittals of four police officers indicted on charges of assaulting Rodney King. Three of the four LAPD officers also were acquitted of excessive force charges despite video evidence showing them beating King for 15 minutes. The jury couldn’t agree on whether the fourth used excessive force. |

In 1997: The Chemical Weapons Convention of 1993 went into effect. It was an agreement between 165 states that outlawed the development, storing and use of chemical weapons. |

In 2004: The World War II Memorial officially opened in Washington, D.C. Located at the National Mall. Designed by designed by Friedrich St. Florian, the plaza is adorned with columns representing U.S. states and a Freedom Wall on the west side. The wall contains 4,048 gold stars, with each star honoring 100 Americans who died in the war. |
