Today is National Kindergarten Day! I don’t know if you’re celebrating but I’m planning to spend some time watching online videos of adorable 5 year olds and their amazing teachers. Every time I stumble across one of those videos, the rest of the world falls away for just a moment. Their wonder at a new discovery in the science corner, their giggles at storytime, their joy in friendship with their classmates–it all allows me to dwell in the goodness in the world for the few minutes the video plays and, if I’m lucky, carry it with me for the rest of the day.
So I thought today was the perfect opportunity to reflect on how important our youth mental health work is at Inseparable. We envision a world where all children–including the 4 million American children who are in Kindergarten–have access to the mental health supports and services they need at school.
If you haven’t seen our new Mental Health Report Card, please take a look at it. It lays out a series of policies states can adopt to support youth mental health in schools and shows each state’s progress on that agenda.
I want us to do everything we can to ensure that today’s kindergarteners can continue to feel that wonder, laughter, and love throughout their lives. And I want us to equip them with the tools they need to manage the inevitable life upsets that can chip away at those feelings. That’s why I’m so proud to be part of an organization that advocates for mental health education and literacy, life skills, wellness screenings, and more to be available in every school in the country.
We are making progress and America’s kindergarteners are better off because of it.
Thanks for supporting the work!
