Today in history

Here are just some of the events on this date in the past.
On this day in 1926: Britain’s future Queen Elizabeth II was born in Mayfair, London. Her reign is the longest of any British monarch. She was queen regnant of 32 sovereign states during her lifetime. She was the first child of King George VI and Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon.
In 1930: A total of 322 inmates were killed and 130 others were injured in a fire at the Ohio State Penitentiary in Columbus, Ohio. Many of the prisoners were burned to death when they were unable to escape their locked cells. The source of the fire allegedly came from a candle flame, which ignited a pile of oily rags. It was the nation’s deadliest prison fire.
In 1934: The Daily Mail printed a photograph depicting the head and long neck of the Loch Ness monster, sparking decades of curiosity. However, the iconic image was later revealed to be an elaborate hoax.
In 1975: South Vietnamese President Nguyen Van Thieu resigned as communist forces took control of the region and U.S. support dwindled. He fled the country five days later. He eventually settled in Foxborough, Massachusetts, where he lived in exile until his death.
In 2016: American music legend Prince Rogers Nelson died at age 57 from a fentanyl overdose. Prince was one of the biggest stars of the 1980s and 90s, infusing his music with a diverse range of genres, including funk, jazz, hip-hop, pop, rock and the blues.
In 2018: Actor Verne Troyer, best known for his role as “Mini-Me” in the “Austin Powers” film series, died from alcohol intoxication at age 49. Troyer had cartilage-hair hypoplasia, which inhibited his growth and contributed to his diminutive height. He was 2 feet, 8 inches tall.
