On this day in 1915: President Woodrow Wilson signed the Rocky Mountain National Park Act, preserving the vast mountain range of 415 square miles (265,807 acres) for generations of visitors. |

In 1925: Award-winning actor, film director and philanthropist Paul Newman, whose work included “The Color of Money” and “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” was born in Shaker Heights, Ohio. |

In 1926: Scottish inventor John Logie Baird presented the first live public demonstration of a true television set to members of the Royal Institution and reporters in London. |

In 1950: India declared its full independence from Great Britain after adopting its own constitution. Rajendra Prasad was sworn in as its first president. |

In 1961: President John F. Kennedy appointed Dr. Janet Travell, 59, to be the White House physician, making her the first woman to hold that position. Kennedy had met Travell in 1955 for treatment of persistent chronic back and knee pain. She resigned in 1965. |

In 1988: Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Phantom of the Opera” made its U.S. debut on Broadway in New York City. The musical became one of the most successful productions globally: It was the longest-running show on Broadway when it closed in 2023, having grossed an estimated $6 billion globally. |

In 1998: “I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky.” President Bill Clinton uttered those words on live television, denying “sexual relations” with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky. The denial later led to impeachment proceedings. |

In 2001: A massive 7.6-magnitude earthquake razed Bhuj, Gujarat, India, killing more than 20,000 people as well as injuring 166,000 others. It destroyed more than 1.2 million houses and buildings across the region, impacting more than 28 million people across Gujarat. |

In 2005: Condoleezza Rice was sworn in as U.S. secretary of state, serving under President George W. Bush, making her the first African American woman to serve in that position. |

In 2020: Basketball superstar Kobe Bryant, who was considered one of the NBA’s greatest players, died at the age of 41 after a Sikorsky S-76B helicopter flying from John Wayne Airport to Camarillo Airport crashed near Calabasas, California. All nine people onboard died, including Bryant and his daughter, Gianna Bryant. |
