We start today in Casa Grande, where glowing tributes have been paid to businessman and philanthropist Claude Gipson, who died Monday, July 29, at age 92. Gipson was born in Centerville, Texas, in 1932 in very humble circumstances and through his early teen and adult years worked as a cotton picker. In 1950 Gipson moved to Arizona, where he continued to work in the labor-intensive cotton and agriculture industry. Read more about Gipson’s contributions to Casa Grande.
Speaking of Casa Grande, five CG women are among hundreds nationwide headed to Kansas City to take part in the largest Granny Basketball tournament in history The national tournament includes 28 teams, and the CG group will play this weekend.
Plus, in national news, Tropical Storm Debby slammed Florida on Monday with torrential rain and high winds, contributing to at least four deaths in the state and causing flooding before turning menacingly toward the Eastern Seaboard’s low-lying regions, threatening to flood some of America’s most historic Southern cities. |
