Here are just some of the events on this date in the past.

•	On this day in 1790: Data collection began for the first United States Census. Although the survey took months, census takers were told to record information as of Aug. 2 – Census Day. The count covered the original 13 states plus what are now Kentucky, Maine, Tennessee and Vermont. It totaled 3.9 million people.
•	In 1920: Marcus Garvey hosted the international convention of the Universal Negro Improvement Association in New York City. He argued that Black Americans should emigrate to Africa because white Americans would never allow them full rights.
•	In 1990: Iraq invaded its wealthy neighbor Kuwait. Prime Minister Saddam Hussein refused to withdraw, setting off the Gulf War.
•	In 1992: At the Barcelona Games, Jackie Joyner-Kersee became the first heptathlete to win two consecutive Olympic gold medals.
•	In 1995: President Bill Clinton signed Executive Order 12968, which banned discrimination based on sexual orientation when determining which government employees may access classified information.
•	In 2018: TikTok, the short-form video-sharing social media network, became available worldwide after merging with Musical.ly.

Major Arizona employer to cut 15% of its workforce

Intel Corp. announced plans to cut about 15% of its global workforce. It was not immediately clear how the cuts would affect its Chandler operation.
