Today in history

Here are just some of the events on this date in the past.
On this day in 1914: Austria-Hungary issued a series of ultimatums to Serbia that included allowing Austria-Hungary to investigate who assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie, and demanded that Serbia cease all anti-Austrian propaganda and dissolve its nationalist organizations. Serbia agreed to all but one of the ultimatums. Three days later, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, igniting World War I.
In 1962: Jackie Robinson made history again, becoming the first Black player to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
In 1967: Riots in Detroit began at the predominantly Black neighborhood of Virginia Park. Racial tensions were at a boiling point, and the police raid of an after-hours nightclub sparked the flame that led to looting, the destruction of nearly 1,400 buildings, multiple fires and 43 deaths as well as 342 injuries. It was one of the worst riots in U.S. history.
In 1982: Veteran actor Vic Morrow and two child actors, Renee Shin-Yi Chen, 6, and Myca Dinh Le, 7, were killed in a helicopter accident during filming of “Twilight Zone: The Movie.” An untimely discharged special-effects explosion on the set caused the helicopter to lose control and careen into the victims.
In 1999: U.S. astronaut Eileen Collins became the first woman to serve as space shuttle commander with the launch of NASA’s space shuttle Columbia.
In 2011: Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter Amy Winehouse, known for her expressive vocals, died at age 27 from alcohol poisoning. Winehouse was found to have had a blood-alcohol content that was more than five times that of the legal driving limit at the time of her death.
