Women In Our Community of KJZZ and KBACH
Hi Peter,

First, thanks to those who could attend our May Book Club Author chat with Emmy Award-winning KJZZ reporter and new author, Christina Estes. It was a pleasure to visit with all of you.

In June, KJZZ’s award-winning Tribal Natural Resources reporter, Gabriel Pietrorazio moderated a panel discussion about uranium mining and the Grand Canyon. Below you’ll find more on this fascinating topic and how to see a replay.

We’ve included links to KBACH podcasts you may not be familiar with and we hope you enjoy them.

We appreciate your support of public radio and hope you have a wonderful summer.

Sincerely,

Linda Pastori

Tribal Natural Resources: Uranium and the Grand Canyon

The first transports of uranium mined from the Pinyon Plain Mine near the Grand Canyon are set to begin soon in northern Arizona. There are questions from tribal stakeholders about the health risks of hauling radioactive elements through tribal lands. KJZZ hosted a panel to get perspective on the issues related to this topic.

Panelists included:

  • Leona Morgan (Navajo), co-founder of HaulNo!
  • Carletta Tilousi (Havasupai), former chairwoman and member of White House Environmental Justice Advisory Council
  • Monica Yellowhair (Navajo), outreach program director at The University of Arizona Cancer Center
  • Leslie Begay (Navajo), former uranium miner and Vietnam Marine veteran
