On this day in 1930: Respecting demands from Black people, the New York Times announced that the “N” in the word “Negro” would be capitalized in its stories. |

In 1942: The U.S. defeated Japanese forces to end the five-day Battle of Midway in the Pacific Theater during World War II. More than 300 U.S. sailors, airmen and Marines, as well as about 3,000 Japanese service members, died in the battle. Midway Atoll is an unincorporated island of the Hawaiian Archipelago that is about 1,300 miles northwest of Honolulu. |

In 1969: “The Johnny Cash Show” premiered on television live from the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee. Cash had met his future wife, June Carter, backstage at the Ryman on the night of his 1956 Grand Ole Opry debut. |

In 1975: Sony unveiled Betamax, the first home videocassette recorder, or VCR, format to capture video from a television. The format later saw competition from JVC, which launched the longer-playing video home system, or VHS, in 1976. VHS ultimately became the industry standard. Sony discontinued making Betamax players in 2002, but it continued making tapes into 2016. |

In 1979: Texas became the first state to recognize Juneteenth, which celebrates the full enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation when U.S. troops took control of the last Confederate state. On June 19, 1865, Union Army Gen. Gordon Granger formally delivered the news to slaves in Texas that President Abraham Lincoln had freed all slaves over two years prior. The news had previously been withheld from enslaved people in Texas. Juneteenth is also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day. |
