Meet our Co-Ambassadors

This year’s Co-Ambassadors are Royce and Piper, who will make a special appearance at the Banner Children’s Open. Guided by Child Life Specialists, Royce and Piper learn what to expect during an upcoming surgery and ways to cope with hospitalization and medical procedures. Their families receive constant support on their child’s journey, too.

Royce, 7, was born prematurely and with an extremely rare condition affecting only one in 40,000 babies, Royce’s diagnosis of Prune Belly Syndrome resulted in three or more birth defects related to his bladder, kidneys, and abdominal muscles. He spent his first 52 days of life in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Banner Children’s at Thunderbird. For kids like Royce, who has been admitted to the hospital for more than a quarter of his life so far, everything matters—every milestone, every success, every Banner Children’s professional who has cared for him.

Piper, 8, was diagnosed with neuroblastoma two years ago and was successfully treated, only to return as stage 4, high-risk, metastatic cancer. She was treated with chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and surgery, and thankfully, the cancer went into remission. But to her family’s shock, a routine scan in 2021 showed Piper had stage 4, high-risk, metastatic neuroblastoma. She is strengthened by her relationship with her twin sister, Peyton, their sisterhood as cozy as her fluffy, decked out, and stuffed animal-filled hospital bed at Banner Children’s at Desert.

Jody Oehler, host of “The Drive” on Fox Sports 910 AM, will guide the festivities at the 2024 Banner Children’s Open, from beginning to end.

Rahul Chawla, MD, Pediatric Intensivist/ED Physician at Banner Children’s at Thunderbird, will be speaking on the importance of the Child Life program at all three Banner Children’s medical centers.
