A 17-year-old opened fire at a high school in Perry, Iowa, Thursday, killing one sixth-grader and wounding five others before killing himself, police said.
The gunman was armed with a pump-action shotgun and a small-caliber handgun. Students hid and fled during the shooting while parents rushed to the school. The town of 80,000 held a vigil that evening for the injured students and the school principal, who was also shot.
The suspect’s motive remains unknown, police said. They’re looking into “a number of social media posts” he made around the time of the shooting.
New York Sues Texas Bus Firms for $700 Million
New York City Mayor Eric Adams has sued 17 Texas charter bus companies for $708 million in the latest effort to block migrants from Texas being bused into NYC. The suit targets only the bus companies and not the state of Texas.
The lawsuit accuses the bus companies of illegally transporting more than 33,000 migrants to New York and says $708 million is the amount it’s spent to provide shelter and services to the migrants over the last two years.
The charter bus companies couldn’t be reached for comment Thursday. They’re generally small businesses without press relations offices who work for the state under contract.
ESPN and the NCAA signed a new $920 million media rights deal that triples the amount ESPN currently pays in return for rights to 40 NCAA championships, including the “March Madness” college women’s basketball tournament.
The eight-year deal will cost about $115 million annually, up from the current $40 million a year. It includes 21 women’s sports championships, bringing new money to those sports.
Included are rights to a variety of women’s sports, including basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, softball, and baseball. Nearly 60% of the money is earmarked for women’s sports, which has seen strong ratings growth.
