Railroad Museum Offers Virtual & Sensory Friendly Programs In January & February

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania has slated a number of virtual and sensory friendly programs during the months of January and February. Additional program information and registrations for these programs are available on Eventbrite. Mark your calendar for:

● VIRTUAL SIMPLE MACHINES AND THE RAILROAD. Tuesday, January 2, from 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. ET. Designed for children ages 5 through 12. Children learn about six simple machines and how they make up larger machines on the railroad. Through demonstration and active participation, they’ll discover how each simple machine makes a task easier through design. Children will be challenged throughout the program to find examples in their home and in their everyday lives

● SENSORY SATURDAY. Saturday, January 6, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. The Museum reduces lighting and sounds and maintains a low attendance, with quiet spaces set up for breaks, for children and other individuals with special sensory needs. A few of the historic trains will be open, with Museum staff present to answer questions.

● VIRTUAL RAILROADING MERIT BADGE WORKSHIP Saturday, January 13, from 9:00 a.m. to

11:00 a.m. ET.  For ages 11 to 17. The Museum is the perfect setting for boys and girls to learn and earn the railroading merit badge through the use of historic images and artifacts, model trains and behind the scenes tours. All requirements except for the “At Home Requirement” are fulfilled on the day of the workshop.

● VIRTUAL TRAIN TOUR: THE E44. Tuesday, January 16, from 10:00 a.m. to

10:30 a.m. ET. Designed for children ages 5 through 12. Children investigate the inside of the historic E44 locomotive No. 4465. Guided by a Museum educator, they’ll visit the cab, where the workers control the train, and explore the catwalk and maintenance areas.

● VIRTUAL WORKIN’ ON THE RAILROAD. Tuesday, February 13, from 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. ET. Designed for children ages 5 through 12. Children experience unique railroad objects and photographs, live with Museum staff. They’ll also learn about the jobs of conductor, station agent and engineer.

April 6. The seventh annual craft beer tasting event held among the Museum’s historic trains in Rolling Stock Hall.

● MASON-DIXON RAMBLE. Sunday,

May 19. Enjoy train rides on the Northern Central Railway and the Walkersville Southern Railroad, along with a lunch in New Freedom and dinner at the historic Glen Rock Mill Inn. The deadline for registration is February 16.
