The state of the white-wine union in Spain is relatively strong. The country’s best varietal and blended whites have both made their mark amid a sea of more renowned reds.

While there’s room for overall improvement and growth within the category, Spain still produces its share of fine white wines. There are dozens of very good to excellent bottlings made from Albariño, Godello, Verdejo and Viura as well as more obscure varieties like Treixadura, Tempranillo Blanco, Garnacha Blanca and even Palomino, the main grape for Sherry.

There are steely wines, leesy wines, oaky wines and even oxidative wines that all show proper balance through bold acidity matched against compelling flavors of fruit, oak or both. It’s these selections that are driving Spain’s white-wine scene forward.

Planetes de Nin Blanca 2021 is made up of 100% Carignan grapes. On the nose it is very subtle, with some notes reminiscent of white fruit. On the palate it is much more powerful and expressive, with volume, freshness and pronounced acidity. Dry and elegant finish.

The 100% Godello is matured in two 2,500-liter oak foudres, and a small part fermented and matured in amphorae with skins. It’s varietal and expressive and comes from two plots, one with sandy soils and another one in Cacabelos with some boulders. There’s always a small percentage of Doña Blanca in the blend. It’s very dry and has a chalky texture. 6,000 bottles made. Producing aromas of flint, wet stones, and Asian pear. Tension and saltiness on the palate, balanced by bright acidity.

Old-vine Viura (also known as Macabeo) from select blocks in the La Loma vineyard where the soil has the most limestone. This is a great white wine. A wine that can comfortably be compared to some of the finest white wines from anywhere in the world, but the easiest comparison would be to white Burgundy. Fermented and aged in 500L French oak. It has the cool reserve of the best wines from the Côte-d’Or, but it is more expressive. Viura has a wider range of fruit tones than Chardonnay. The aromatics and flavors are dominated by citrus and stone fruits. Grapefruit, lemon, apples, and pears but with tangerine and peach notes that give it a little more exotic tone. The palate is silky and supple with the French oak softening vibrant acidity. It finishes long and fresh with a persistent minerality.   .
