“The rich get richer” ESA voucher scam. Wealthy families and private, for-profit schools are the clear winners of Arizona’s expanded ESA voucher scam.Conservative lawmakers have refused to reign the out-of-control program in, and now many private schools are raising their prices by thousands of dollars. In many cases, lower-income families are being priced out, while wealthy families can afford to pay the difference. Meanwhile, the majority of Arizona kids who attend public schools suffer the consequences as their schools are defunded to pay for the out-of-control program.

 

Mohave County. The Mohave County Board of Supervisors voted against a proposal to conduct a 100% hand count of ballots in the 2024 election, following testimony from democracy advocates, including our very own Voting Rights Director, Casey Clowes. The push to completely hand count ballots in 2024 is a result of anti-democracy extremists, like Rep. Sonni Borelli, who are intentionally trying to sow distrust in our elections. Hand counts are expensive, inaccurate, time-consuming, and unnecessary, as Arizona already utilizes a vote-counting system that is “tested, verified, and audited.”

Repro advocates optimistic re: ballot initiative. The organizers leading the Arizona for Abortion Access ballot initiative are feeling good about our opportunity to protect abortion access as a right in Arizona on our 2024 ballots. While hundreds of thousands of signatures are needed to put the proposal on the ballot, abortion is a top issue for many voters, and the majority agree that everyone should have the freedom to make their own family-planning decisions without interference from politicians. Everywhere abortion has been on the ballot, we win!
