Good morning! On this date in 1789, Benjamin Franklin penned his last great quotable phrase, mentioning in a letter to a friend that “Nothing is certain but death and taxes.” The context of the line, rarely noted, can be read here.
If you haven’t signed up for The Flyover yet, you can take care of that with one click.
LMNT is throwing in a free sample pack of their electrolyte drinks (Editor’s note: these are great. I have a box in my pantry and need to reorder soon) with any purchase. See what they’re all about!
Americans Get a Break on Taxes
The IRS announced a 5.4% inflation adjustment in its tax brackets, giving Americans a chance to increase their take-home pay. The changes are for the 2024 tax year, meaning returns filed in 2025.
In addition to boosting the income thresholds for each tax bracket, the IRS will also raise the standard deduction for married couples and individuals. For married couples, it will rise to $29,200 from $27,700.
The impact of the new tax brackets varies based on income level. Here’s a link to a chart with next year’s marginal brackets; see how it affects you.
Trump, Media Want His Trial Televised Live
In a rare show of agreement between Donald Trump and America’s biggest media outlets, both have asked the federal courts to allow TV cameras to cover his Washington D.C. trial on election interference charges.
“I want this trial to be seen by everybody in the world,” Trump said as his lawyer filed papers requesting the current rules banning TV coverage in federal courts be suspended for his case. Some Democratic leaders also asked that cameras be allowed.
Prosecutors oppose the effort, saying it could intimidate witnesses and jurors. Some experts say the decades-old prohibition on cameras in federal courts is unlikely to be overturned by the Judicial Conference, the court’s policy-making body.
Study: Wegovy Diet Drug Cuts Heart Risks
The popular weight-loss drug Wegovy reduced the risk of serious heart problems by 20% in a large international study, and it could change the way doctors treat certain heart patients.
It’s the first research indicating that an obesity medication can safely prevent a heart attack or stroke, and it could put pressure on insurers to cover the drugs. They’re currently considered cosmetic treatments and not insured.
The closely-watched trial of Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy involved 17,500 people who received weekly injections. The results were presented Saturday at an American Heart Association meeting and published simultaneously in the New England Journal of Medicine.
