Migrants at Border Hit New High
A record number of “migrant encounters” were reported in September, with 270,000 migrants being handled by border agents, more than any month previously. That brings the total for 2023 to 2.47 million, also a record.
Within that number were 18 encounters with migrants on the terror watch list, making a total of 169 for the year, yet another record and more than the last six years combined.
In response, some Republicans renewed their calls to impeach Homeland Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. “Secretary Mayorkas’ policies have failed,” said House Homeland Security Chairman Mark Green.
Nine Republicans Vie for Speaker Nomination
A new week of electioneering begins this evening in the House, with nine Republicans tossing their hat into the ring as candidates for Speaker. Here’s a rundown of who those nine are.
GOP legislators are set to meet behind closed doors for their candidate forum today at 6:30 p.m., then will move to an internal nomination election on Tuesday morning. The deadline for legislators to file their candidacies was Sunday at noon.
It’s expected to take multiple rounds of voting for any of the nine candidates to emerge as the winner. The vote then moves to the full House, and it remains unclear if any single candidate can unify the various Republican factions.
Ranking America’s Most Stressful States
Minnesota is the least stressed-out state in the U.S., according to a ranking from WalletHub. The rankings use 41 metrics to measure stress across four key dimensions: work, money, family, and health.
Mississippi tops out as the most stressed state due largely to money and work-related stress. New York and California weren’t in the Top 10 of the most or least-stressed lists.
