Last Week This Morning: Far-right extremists honor 9/11 with conspiracy theories

Good morning, Rj! Happy Sunday! ☀️

Elected officials must fight for immigrant communities. Last week, a judge ruled that the DACA program that has protected 800,000 young people from deportation and helped them to finish school or apply for a work permit, is illegal. For years, the program has been under various litigation that has placed many immigrants in a state of limbo. Now, it is likely headed to the Supreme Court. While the recent ruling does not end protections for the 23,000 recipients in Arizona, it does mean that 12,000 eligible immigrants in our state will be unable to apply. Read more about how Arizona DACA recipients are reacting.

Far-right extremists honor 9/11 with conspiracy theories. State Sen. Justine Wadsack took to social media on the 22nd anniversary of 9/11 to spread disinformationimplying the tragedy was a “false flag” operation. She then doubled down and responded to the local newspaper that reported on the issue with antisemitic attacks. Wadsack was not the only Arizona Republican legislator to post false claims about 9/11; Janae Shamp of Surprise also posted similar 9/11 conspiracy theories from QAnon on a right-wing social media platform.

Supt. Horne at Moms for Liberty event. Last week, Tom Horne spoke at an eventhosted by Moms for Liberty – an anti-public education group that targets educators and spreads disinformation, anti-LGBTQ+ hate, and advocates for book bans among other bigoted policies. They were recently designated by the Southern Poverty Law Center as an extremist group. The event was attended by numerous GOP politicians as Moms for Liberty attempts to ramp up its presence in the Valley. Supt. Tom Horne aligned with the group and expressed his goal of electing even more anti-public education conservatives to local school boards.

Horne needs to focus on improving public education. Don’t miss State Rep. Analise Ortiz’s responseto Supt. Tom Horne’s attacks on dual-language programs for English learners.
