Last Week This Morning: Back to school with Tom…
Good morning, Rj! Happy Sunday! ☀️
ICYMI: Reproductive rights groups launch efforts to put abortion on the 2024 ballot! The Arizona for Abortion Access ballot initiative would give voters the opportunity to enshrine abortion access as a right in the Arizona constitution. If Arizonans approve the measure, abortion will be protected against ongoing attempts by anti-abortion politicians to ban or limit access. Groups have until July 2024 to collect valid 384,000 signatures to get the measure on the ballot, but are aiming to collect significantly more than required to ensure that enough are verified. Stay tuned for updates!
Back to school with Tom Horne. On Thursday, the Arizona Department of Education sent out a letter encouraging local public schools to discriminate against LGBTQ+ youth. These unnecessary policies perpetuate hate and alienate trans youth. But not only is Supt. Horne using his position as head of the Department of Education to attack LGBTQ+ kids, he’s also fear-mongering to push his anti-public education agenda. The letter is designed to cause a backlash against Arizona K-12 schools, despite the fact that schools already have procedures in place to ensure the safety of all students.
Trump indicted in Georgia. The indictment of former President Donald Trump in Georgia on charges related to the fake elector scheme to overturn the 2020 election, reveals new details about the similar plot in Arizona. AG Kris Mayes recently confirmed she is investigating the Arizona phony elector scheme, which includes two current lawmakers, Sen. Anthony Kern (R-Glendale) and Sen. Jake Hoffman (R-Queen Creek), as well as former AZGOP chair Kelli Ward.
Gov. Hobbs declares a heat state of emergency. The declaration and accompanying executive order prioritizes heat-relief measures across the state of Arizona following 30 consecutive days of excessive heat warnings. Get the detailsfrom our partners at CHISPA Arizona.
Support the Arizona for Abortion Access initiative. Language for the initiative is being finalized before groups can begin collecting signatures, but we’re going to need your help! Sign up to get involved to protect abortion access in our state.
