Among the groups we work with, Jay West (T8ke) and r/bourbon have some of the best private barrels we offer. Whenever Jay mentioned that there was a chance at more barrels I was ecstatic. Founded in 2010, Westland Distillery mills, ferments, distills and ages all their own American Single Malt. When it comes to transparency, Westland is a embodiment of an open book. Scroll down to see the information they freely share. We had some fantastic picks offered back in April, but today we have two new finishes that continue to have us excited.
Cask #6668 (Tempranillo) and #6210 (Jurancon) are still keeping with the 7-years age statement, and both are distilled 100% 5-malt barley. Jurancon refers to a wine region in South West France, that in this case produces sweet white wines and as a finishing barrel adds fresh pastry, apple butter, and pear to otherwise rich and viscous salted caramel and baking spices notes.
Tempranillo is a grape variety widely grown to make full-bodied Spanish reds, usually ripening several weeks earlier than most Spanish red grapes. The Tempranillo was also an easy favorite from all those in attendance during the selection, and really showcases excellent complexity. Think sweet red berries meets cocoa, with tobacco, char, cream, and nuanced oak on the finish.
