Last Week This Morning: No Coyotes in Tempe!

Good morning, Rj! Happy Sunday! ☀️

No Coyotes in Tempe! On Tuesday, in a huge win for the Tempe community, voters rejected the proposal to build a Coyotes stadium and luxury entertainment district on Tempe’s last large plot of land. The deal would have offered a massive tax break for the team’s shady billionaire owner, Alex Murelo. Voters showed up in record turnout to reject the deal, thanks in large part to the effort by the opposition group Tempe 1st, with support from AZ AANHPI for Equity, Arizona Worker Power, Arizona Students Association, and more.

#AZLEG goes on break. But not before Republican lawmakers pushed through a number of harmful bills, including a slate of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, a book ban, and an attempt to criminalize abortion. These bills will not be signed by the Governor and are another example of time wasted by the Republican-majority Legislature. The session will resume on June 12th, taking an almost month-long break after passing the budget earlier than expected.

A week without Title 42! Anti-immigration Trump policy was lifted on May 11th where migrants were immediately denied asylum upon entry. Although this restrictive policy has expired, new severe asylum policies from the Biden administration have been introduced. Unsurprisingly, Republicans continue to quickly block any progress on immigration reform and policy. They don’t even bother to denounce the armed vigilantes intimidating migrants and advocates at the border. They forget the vast majority of Americans want a humane and safe pathway to citizenship and asylum.

AZ cracks down on medical fraud. Over 100 Arizona healthcare providers are being investigated over a multi-million dollar Medicaid insurance fraud scheme that targeted indigenous communities. Thanks to AG Kris Mayes and Gov. Katie Hobbs for taking action.

Tell Gov. Hobbs to stand up for voting rights! SB1066 and SB1324/HB2560 are on our Governor’s desk that could be signed any minute – we need your urgent help to get them vetoed! Fill out this form or Call Governor Hobbs (602) 542 4331 and tell her “SB1066 and HB2560 violates voters’ privacy and creates huge obstacles for grassroots groups that work to get Arizonans registered. Please veto it!”
