Hear from Mario, an MCSF scholar whose father was killed while serving in Afghanistan.

Peter,

Lieutenant Colonel Mario D. Carazo was a devoted father who spent weekends taking his children, Mario and Milla, to museums and coaching Mario’s soccer team. As a Marine, LtCol Carazo fulfilled his dreams of serving his country and becoming a pilot.

Tragically, in July 2010, LtCol Carazo was shot down and killed by enemy fire while flying a combat mission over Afghanistan, leaving behind Mario and Milla to grow up without their father.

The Carazo children continue to persevere and live to make their dad proud. Education was incredibly important for LtCol Carazo, and is a priority for Mario and Milla. It is our privilege to award scholarships to Mario and Milla and honor their father’s sacrifice.

With your help, Mario is continuing his father’s legacy. After he graduates this year from High Point University with a degree in Political Science and International Relations, Mario wants to become a Naval officer.

Milla plans to graduate from High Point in 2025 with a major in Communications and a double minor in Psychology and Legal Studies. Her current career goal is to become a lawyer. She is not only grateful for the financial support she’s received, but also appreciates those who believe in her and her future.

As we approach Memorial Day, please take a moment to learn more about how the MCSF is helping children of the fallen, like Mario and Milla Carazo.

We will forever be faithful to our brothers and sisters who have made the ultimate sacrifice – Semper Fidelis – and we will always care for their families like they are our own.

Semper Fidelis,

Colonel Odie Van Opdorp USMC (Ret.)
