Last Week This Morning: Taxpayer-funded discrimination
Good morning, Rj! Happy Sunday! ☀️
“Schools are doing the choosing”. Private and religious schools are being allowed to discriminate against LGBTQ+ students, teachers, and families, all on the taxpayer dime. Arizona’s new voucher handbook offers no protections against discrimination, while diverting hundreds of millions of dollars from public schools to fund these unaccountable private schools. It’s no surprise that Superintendent Tom Horne and Republican lawmakers are doing nothing to protect them – attacking trans youth and defunding public schools are top of their agenda.
Recall of election denier fails. Unfortunately, the attempted petition to recall Cochise County Supervisor Tom Crosby will not move forward after falling short of the required signatures. Crosby was one of two supervisors who refused to certify the county’s 2022 election results on the basis of unproven conspiracy theories that were part of the MAGA effort to overturn the election.
People over politics. Gov. Hobbs signed two bills that will allow the state to continue offering critical services to Arizonans, but more action is still necessary. It’s time for Republican lawmakers to prioritize the needs of Arizona instead of their political agendas.
- HB2432 authorizes the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System to spend $3.37 billion in federal funds to continue providing Medicaid for 2.3 million Arizonans.
- Republican lawmakers still have not passed the needed continuation for AHCCCS or approved Gov. Hobbs’ nominee to lead the program, putting it at risk of shutting down.
- HB2456 provides a 4-year continuation for the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind, which serves approximately 2,000 Arizonans.
- The original proposal for an 8-year continuation, as requested by the ASDB, was rejected by extremist Republicans, despite bipartisan support. Hobbs has asked lawmakers to send her a full continuation next year.
Sinema sold out. We joined Arizona grassroots organizations to call out Senator Sinema in light of new reports on her luxury spending as she leaves Arizonans behind. Check out the CNN coverage here.
