Your generous gift today will immediately strengthen The Wilderness Society’s work to protect critical ecosystems like the Arctic—a vital region that’s increasingly under threat from oil and gas companies:
- In The Western Arctic, the Willow Project—ConocoPhillips’ plan for a huge oil-development project—is estimated to release more than 280 million metric tons of greenhouse gas over a 30-year period. This is a climate bomb that will harm local Indigenous communities and guarantee decades of greenhouse gas emissions when the world should be moving away from fossil fuels. So, we’re taking the government to court to stop it.
- In the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, the ancestral homeland of the Indigenous Gwich’in and Iñupiat Tribal Nations, oil and gas lease sales mandated in 2017 by Trump’s Republican-controlled Congress still threaten to devastate the region. Following the leadership of our Indigenous partners, we’re advocating for the Biden administration to cancel existing leases and adopt a plan to protect the Refuge from future lease sales; applying pressure on major insurance companies—like Liberty Mutual—to make sure they don’t back drilling here; and working to advance national legislation that will permanently protect the refuge from the threat of drilling for generations to come.
Pitch in NOW and your gift goes 5X as far to protect the Arctic and other vital places from fossil fuel development, climate change and more.
