Years ago, some scientists scoffed at the notion of bacteria and microbes in cancer cells. Not only are they in there, new studies show they can help cancer cells spread more rapidly (above, an illustration of the human microbiome).

The results are pointing to another way to battle these tumors—and encouraging new tools in the fight.
