Today is International Women’s Day, when we celebrate the vast and varied achievements of women around the world.

But International Women’s Day isn’t just about celebration. It’s also about making sure the issues that disproportionately affect women and girls get the attention they deserve. And the reality is that women displaced by conflict face a unique set of challenges — and those challenges require unique solutions.

Here’s one quick way to learn a little about women refugees — see if you can answer the question below:

More than half of refugees are women and girls

One in five displaced women has experienced some form of sexual abuse.

Women refugees are overwhelmingly the primary caretakers for children and often end up responsible for others in addition to their own well-being.

At HIAS, we work every day to support women, girls, and all refugees around the world. We recognize the unique hardships women and girls experience, and we do much of our work with this in mind, including:

• Offering mental health support, legal aid, economic support, and more to survivors of gender-based violence;
• Hosting women’s support groups that provide safe spaces for women to gather, connect, and support each other;
• Educating men, boys, and communities about the steps we can all take to promote gender equality and prevent gender-based violence.
