Mowellens

Dear Mowellens community,

I remember this day very vividly from five years ago. My nerves were on edge, exactly the symptom I was on a quest to solve for others. I was nervous to press play on a business I had spent the last 11 months of life working to get up and running. And on the day of March 6th, 2018, the website was going live. And here’s how it unfolded from there.

Feelings of fear led. What is something were to break? What if I can’t get orders out on time? What if no one ever finds the site? All these racing thoughts made me grab for my own bottle of Inner Peace.

Looking back at my calendar from that year it wasn’t only the business that instilled these feelings. It was the happenings in my personal life too. An MRI of the brain at UCLA that afternoon at 3:15 for my now late husband. An appointment the following day at City of Hope to visit a doctor with a new trial to treat glioblastoma brain cancer. Appointments for a company I was consulting for at the time layered into the mix as well. I took a consulting gig 7 months into walking away from the biotech industry to start Mowellens. The outflow of money was getting to be too much and I needed to see the tide turn. On top of it all I was training for the New York Marathon three days out of the week with a long run on Saturdays. Meetings for business, meetups with friends, runs, doctors appointments, and milestones dotted the calendar of March 2018. And thinking back, this was one of the times in my life where I felt the most balanced.

A lot of work, a little social, performance training, and progress…..it felt good.

My thoughts swirled a bit as I wondered when the first order from the website would come in and who it would be. After two weeks of the site being on I had sold $347.88. I did a happy dance. People had found us. We were alive!

How did we grow? Everyday was progress. I met with someone at least three days a week to introduce them to Mowellens. Educational events on growth marketing and softwares to learn e-commerce strategies accelerated my lack of experience in CPG.

And on April 16th, 2018 we did $5000 in one day.

I stared at my phone in tears of gratitude as influencers like Jeanette Aranda (ShutTheKaleUp) and Chinae Alexander shared their love for Mowellens….organically. I recorded my screen so I had the memories of the rise. Erin, Jenna, Jessica, Alex, Louis, Erica….the lean team that has worked to get us on podcasts, in Nordstrom and beyond. I cherish the memories of the hard work and the people who helped us get off the ground.

By the end of our second month we had done $20,000 in revenue and it was just the beginning. We were grateful. We still are grateful. Over the years I have had conversations with many investors, distributors, and partners who were interested in coming on board to catapult our growth. The giants like Unilever just didn’t feel right for me. And so I kept the company bootstrapped, just me as the single founder and person on the cap table, no investors.

The future for Mowellens is shining and, through it all, it is this company and the community that exists around it that has kept me going through all life has given. Launch, loss, love, and rebirth all have co-existed in the 5-year journey. Our mission to create clean, pure, purpose-driven products with results you can see and feel still rings true today. We continue to source from farms that utilize regenerative agriculture and biodynamic farming methods. Nutrient density and soil health are at the top of the list of mission critical priorities in our formulations. These values are how we are able to produce powerful plant-fueled products with cannabinoid and terpene profiles that stand as best in class.

So this month we celebrate a journey of progress. Five years with open doors. Five years of connection. Five years of allowing us into your homes and your lives at good times and dark, stressful times. Thank you to each of you who have been of part of the journey. Thank you for choosing Mowellens. The best is yet to come!

xx
