Good morning, Rj! Happy Sunday! ☀️
Brnovich lied to Arizonans. Former Attorney General Mark Brnovich hid evidence that disproved allegations of widespread voter fraud, part of the Big Lie. His office conducted an extensive investigation spanning over 10,000 hours, and instead of telling Arizonans the truth – that the allegations were no more than conspiracy theories from sore loser candidates – he buried these details in the report. Brnovich lied to Arizona voters for his own political gain.
Tax break for landlords vetoed. On Thursday, Gov. Katie Hobbs vetoed a Republican-passed tax break benefitting landlords. The legislation would not have required that landlords pass the savings from the tax break on, doing little to alleviate rising costs for renters. In the midst of an affordable housing crisis, Arizonans need legislation that delivers real relief. But instead, Republican lawmakers refused to give hearings for many progressive housing bills, killing these proposals until next year.
The dangerous impacts of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. Last weekend, a local LGBTQ+ business had to cancel their live drag story hour after a bomb threat was made by a white supremacist organization. Event organizers pointed to the “terror campaign” directed at drag performers and the LGBTQ+ community supported by far-right lawmakers who have introduced numerous bills to criminalize drag. While Arizona voters can rely on Gov. Katie Hobbs to veto anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, the attacks by Republican lawmakers have real and harmful consequences, and must stop.
Crossover week. Last week was a busy one at the Arizona Legislature as lawmakers advanced hundreds of bills through their chambers. Don’t miss this update from Rep. Analise Ortize at the Capitol.
