Oil and gas companies drilling on public lands is harmful for all kinds of reasons. Methane pollution is one of them.

Currently, oil and gas companies are allowed to intentionally and regularly spew methane into the air—and light it on fire—while they’re pumping oil and methane gas from the ground on public lands. The Bureau of Land Management has a chance to change that—if we tell them to strengthen their proposed Methane Waste Prevention Rule.

“Flaring”—the burning of extra methane gas at oil wells—releases billions of cubic feet of methane pollution into the atmosphere. It’s an intense contributor to climate change, associated with dirty air pollution and a huge waste of communities’ money.

But if the BLM follows the lead of states like New Mexico and Colorado, they can tighten regulations to limit oil and gas production’s negative impact on the climate, protect the health of frontline communities and prevent waste.
