Webinar Follow-Up: Q&A on International Student Issues

Dear Stakeholder,

We have posted a set of questions and answers online to follow up on our August 25, 2022 interagency webinar with the Department of State, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on international student issues. More than 620 stakeholders attended this session, and we received numerous written questions.

After the webinar, we sent USCIS a list of questions we received that reflected the main issues attendees had asked about. The agency’s response in the posted follow-up Q&A covers:

• Maintaining F-1 student status;
• Reinstatement of F-1 status;
• Optional practical training (OPT);
• Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization;
• Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) checks for federal, state, and local benefit-granting agencies to verify a benefit applicant’s immigration status;
• Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS); and
• Change of address.

Over the past few months, our office has continued to engage with stakeholders involved in international student issues. On December 21, 2022, we sent a series of recommendations to USCIS aimed at assisting students and other stakeholders in navigating some of the issues they frequently encounter in seeking immigration benefits such as changes of status and employment authorization.
