Yaoundé, the bustling capital of Cameroon, is a city of about 2.8 million.

You’ll find a robust tobacco and beer industry, a sprawling downtown area and some fascinating architecture. You might also stumble upon a few soccer stadiums or handball pitches or basketball courts (Philadelphia 76ers superstar Joel Embiid is from Yaoundé).

What you won’t find are any baseball fields.

Still, what you might find are baseball players.

While much of the United States endures a wave of arctic weather causing temperatures to plummet below zero, here’s a truly heartwarming story.

Over the years, we’ve seen a number of clubs go all out in free agency, signing multiple elite free agents in a single offseason. But few have been as aggressive as the Mets under owner Steve Cohen.

“I’m a Yankees historian,” the last Yankees captain said about the next one. “So this is historic. People will be talking about it 20, 30, 40 years from now. There’s only a short list of Yankees captains.”

After winning the first two World Baseball Classic tournaments in 2006 and ’09, Japan finished third in the next two competitions. They’ll look to get back to their winning ways this spring and they’ll have Cubs outfielder Seiya Suzuki returning to help the squad.

In celebration of the holiday season, MLB’s Black Employee Resource Group and CC and Amber Sabathia’s PitCCh In Foundation hosted a Holiday Party Caravan for youth from inner-city Boys & Girls Clubs.
