A few months ago, we asked our supporters to help us advocate for the protection of Avi Kwa Ame in Southern Nevada. This ecologically rich spot is the ancestral homeland of 10 Yuman-speaking tribes and the Hopi and Chemehuevi Paiute. Since then, the threat of development in the area—called “the center of creation” by some Tribal leaders—has only crept closer, and the voices of community leaders calling for its protection have only grown louder.

With one new national monument designation under his belt (Camp Hale-Continental Divide National Monument in Colorado), this is the time for the president to act. Protecting Avi Kwa Ame will not only permanently safeguard places with great significance for Indigenous tribes and habitat for wildlife like the desert tortoise, but help ensure local access to recreation.
