On #SpiritDay and every day, the D-backs are proud to take a stand against bullying and support LGBTQ youth by symbolically going purple. According to the national LGBTQ organization GLAAD, Spirit Day is a stand against bullying in all its forms and highlights the disproportionate rates of bullying faced by LGBTQ youth. Seven out of 10 LGBTQ students experience harassment while at school; more than half of them (59.5%) report that they also feel unsafe.
#SpiritDay began in 2010 and was organized and developed by GLAAD as the product of an idea by teenager Brittany McMillan. McMillan’s mission is to honor young people who lost their lives to suicide and to take a stand against bullying. This day occurs on the third Thursday each October during National Bullying Prevention Month. Support #SpiritDay by wearing purple and post on your social media platforms using #SpiritDay to demonstrate your support and encourage those around you to do the same.
