We understand that election season can be tiring, but at DAGA we’re staying motivated by looking toward the big picture.

State AGs fight for justice and it is a job that is incredibly important given our current judicial landscape. The same conservative Supreme Court – with three of Donald Trump’s appointees – that wrote the majority opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization will be ruling on a number of important cases in 2023. These rulings could remove protections, and send key civil rights issues back to the states, like they did with abortion.

Our Democratic AGs have been and will continue to be the legal leaders on each of the critical issues raised by these cases – from protecting the environment to advocating for the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community. In fact, if this conservative Court continues to carve away at our rights, in many states Democratic AGs will be the last line of defense in protecting our basic human rights. With Congress closely divided, we know that we can’t ignore this critical part of the fight to enact smart, progressive policy across the country.

It’s clear that if we’re going to protect abortion access, gun safety, the climate, and more, we must elect state officials who will protect our rights on the frontlines. Chip in today and help us elect more Dem AGs who will protect our rights this November.

The Supreme Court’s new term recently began and we know there are six Republican-appointed justices who will shape our justice system for years to come. Here’s what’s happened and what’s to come:

Environment:

• The Supreme Court has already heard a case that will redefine federal waterways and leave many of our country’s wetlands and streams unprotected from development and pollution.

Elections:

• There is a case on the Supreme Court’s docket that could potentially allow state legislatures to have close to complete control over drawing district lines. This could make it easier for state GOP lawmakers to give themselves an unfair advantage in elections – and throw the 2024 presidential election into chaos.
• In Merrill v. Milligan, the legality of racial gerrymandering will be decided. SCOTUS may decide to allow states to draw maps that dilutes the vote of many communities of color to such an extent that their vote effectively is no longer important in elections

LGBTQIA+ Community:

• SCOTUS will hear a case to decide whether a business is allowed to refuse services to someone on the basis of their sexual identity. We’ve seen this before, but the current federal judicial landscape makes us more driven than ever to elect AGs that will protect the LGBTQIA+ community.

We might not be able to change the current makeup of the court with a snap of our fingers, but we can elect Dem AGs in as many states as possible to push back against radical decisions from a conservative court.
