Last Week This Morning: Don’t lie to poll workers…
Good morning, Rj! Happy Sunday! ☀️
AZ Repro Activists Holding GOP to Account. Reproductive justice groups are calling on Gov. Ducey to call a special session for the Legislature to repeal the pre-statehood near-total ban on abortion in Arizona. Two conflicting laws are on the books resulting in confusion over whether the Arizona territorial ban or the 15-week abortion ban, passed this year, is law. A Pima County Superior Court judge ruled the pre-statehood ban is law. However some Republicans, like Ducey, are using the confusion to mislead voters on whether or not they support the full territorial ban, while others, like Brnovich want to see the territorial ban enforced. Ducey’s office has said the request is under review.
Don’t lie to poll workers. Or listen to Wendy Rogers. After spending literal years spreading lies about election fraud without evidence, the state senator is now encouraging voters to lie to poll workers. Rogers pushed a senseless scheme at a closed door Payson Tea Party meeting, encouraging voters to falsely claim identity theft at the polls, in an attempt to get law enforcement called. In effect, this would have likely “little impact on vote tabulation”, and could even result in prosecution for the person attempting to disrupt the election process. It’s ridiculous and unacceptable behavior from a lawmaker, but unsurprising from Wendy, who Arizona Republicans refuse to hold accountable, no matter what she does.
ICYMI: Progressive Wins. We’re up against a lot in Arizona, it’s important to celebrate the successes! Here are seven of the most important wins of the 2022 Arizona Legislative Session, thanks in part to Arizona’s community organizations, who were crucial in fighting back and preventing some of the most dangerous bills from becoming law.
Arizona Attorney General Debate. It was an embarassing performance by MAGA candidate Abe Hamadeh, who said he would enforce Arizona’s abortion bans, confirms he wouldn’t have certified the 2020 election, said he wants to get rid of vote by mail, and more.
Stop the abortion ban. Tell Gov. Ducey to call a special session of the Arizona Legislature to repeal the 1864 abortion ban that criminalizes abortion and was enacted before Arizona was even a state.
